Powder Brown Tang - Acanthurus japonicus - Powder Brown Surgeon
Medium 3" - 4"
Large 5" - 6"
The Powder Brown Tang, also known as the Powder Brown Surgeonfish, Japan Surgeonfish, and White-faced Surgeonfish, has a brown body with a white mark on the cheek between the mouth and eyes. The pectoral, anal, and dorsal fins are dark brown with light blue highlights at the tip. The dorsal fin also has an orange stripe present. The tail is blue with a yellow vertical bar. Yellow striping runs along the body, against the anal and dorsal fins, forming a wishbone-shaped marking.
Though the Powder Brown Tang, looks very much similiar to the A. nigricans, this tang will show a pronounced "white-face" and a red stripe on it's top (dorsal) fin, which will be lacking on the other. Both can be shy when introduced to the aquarium and will require suitable hiding places to refuge in if threatened. The Powder Brown Tang can be finicky when it comes to adjusting to eating prepared foods, so a tank with a flourishing algae crop or live rock will ensure it gets enough to eat during the acclimation process. Like most tangs, this species can be aggressive toward surgeonfish tankmates once it acclimates, especially members of its own kind. So keep only one Powder Brown Tang per aquarium. This species is a generally hardy and inexpensive!
