Naso Tang - Naso lituratus

The Naso Blonde Tang, also known as the Orange-spine Unicornfish, darkens with maturity. As a juvenile, it is dark gray with a yellow stripe on both the dorsal and anal fin. When matured, the body takes on a darker bluish-gray tone and the juvenile striping is supplemented with additional color. The tail takes on a lyre shape and two yellow patches appear at the peduncle spines near the tail. A thin, black mask forms between the eyes and mouth, and the lips develop a yellow color. The Naso Blonde Tangs from Hawaii are often more brightly colored than those found in other areas.

One of the more common fish seen in large aquaria, the Naso Blonde Tang is a friendly and familliar addition to any larger reef or fish only systems.

Many people believe the 'Blonde' and 'Streamer' versions of Naso tangs are different species. The Naso Tangs with streamers are mature males and the Blondes are merely color morphs. Excessive feeding of this fish will cause it to grow too quickly and will soon need a larger tank. Many specimens are hesitant to feed on anything but brown macrolagae. Usually Naso Tangs not aggressive toward tankmates but they may fight with members of it's own species and possibly related forms. They prefers to school with other Naso tangs as juveniles but as an adult will tend to want to be alone.

Maximum Size: The Naso Blonde Tang grows upto 20 inches.

General Size: This fish generally comes in size of 4 to 10 inches.

Minimum Tank Size: A 140 gallons or larger aquarium provides good environment for the Naso Blonde Tang

Tank Conditions: The Naso Blonde Tang should ideally be kept in temperatures between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. A pH value of 8.1 or 8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025 should be maintained. In a fish only aquarium, the specific gravity should fall between 1.020 and 1.023.

Habitat: The Naso Blonde Tang is found on the coral reefs in Indo-Pacific ocean from East Africa to Panama, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe, Rapa and Ducie Islands; throughout Micronesia. Subspecies sandvicensis in the Hawaiian Islands, Great Barrier reef and Red Sea.

Feeding and Diet: The Naso Blonde Tang is a herbivore and likes to eat Dried Seaweed, marine algae, mysid shrimp, Spirulina, Romaine Lettuce, fresh seaweed, and other meaty treats.
