Wartskin Frogfish / Angler - Antennarius maculatus: Wartskin Frogfish also referred to as the Warty Frogfish or Wartskin Frogfish, the Wartskin Angler is aptly named, looking more like a rock or piece of coral. The Wartskin's Angler colors can vary widely, from browns to reds, yellows to purples and white. It also has the chameleonic ability of changing color to blend with its surroundings.

The Wartskin Angler is a very attractive frogfish with nice colours. The large lure can be recognized easily and this frogfish is often seen luring. It is rather a small frogfish but within its range quite common and often seen by divers. Specially juveniles are frequently confused with Antennarius commerson and Antennarius pictus.

Since the Wartskin frogfish are sedentary fishes, their metabolism is quite low. Therefore, infrequent feedings of once or twice a week for adults and three or four times a week for juveniles is highly recommended. Small live fish/shrimp, preferably marine species, or frozen foodstuffs suspended/impaled on a long stick will suffice them .

This species is better maintained in a small aquarium without eatable tankmates. The Wartskin Anglers are often seen out in the open, especially when small, apparently mimicking toxic nudibranchs. Most of them are white with orange or red mottling, but many colors exist. They have prominent illicia (fishing poles) that resemble small fishes.

These fishes are rarely seen in trade.

The Wartskin Angler is a carnivore and likes to eat any small creatures. The Wartskin Frogfish / Angler may act peaceful/ aggressively toward other fish.

Size: The Wartskin Angler grows upto 6 inches. The small size will come to you generally 1 to 2 inches; the medium generally 3 to 4 inches; the large generally 5 to 6 inches not including the caudal fin.

Tank Conditions: A good reef dweller, the Wartskin Angler enjoys perching on coral ledges and requires a tank of at least 30 gallons. The Wartskin Angler is a hardy aquarium member but not recommended for beginners. The water with high quality i.e. temperature of water ranging between 72 degree and 78 degree Fahrenheit, specific gravity of not less than 1.020 and also not more than 1.025 and pH ranging from 8.1 to 8.4 is required for the Wartskin Anglers to live in the aquarium.

Habitat: The Warstkin Frogfish is found in the Sulawesi, Bali, Komodo in Indonesia, Bohol and Negros in the Philippines, Mabul in Borneo and many more dive areas.

Feeding and Diet: The Wartskin Angler feeds by ambush, lying in wait for an unsuspecting fish or crustacean to go by and then lunging forward, grabbing and swallowing the victim whole. The Wartskin Angler has been known to devour fish nearly equal to its own size.

When first introduced into the aquarium, live saltwater feeder shrimp should be used to entice this fish to eat. The Wartskin Angler should be given feeder fish and shrimp, but do not overfeed as they may stop feeding.
