The Green Mandarin Goby or Pterosynchiropus splendidus, is a member of the dragonet family. They are also known as psychedelic fish. Rarer specimens come in reds and there's even a spotted variety, but the average mandarin seen in fish stores is the green mandarin male. Males are selected over females because of their more impressive dorsal fin.
The head and body of the Green Mandarin, also known as the Striped Mandarinfish or Green Mandarinfish, are a mazelike combination of blue, orange, and green. The males may be distinguished from females by their more-elongated first dorsal spine. It is extremely popular with aquarists because of its unusual beauty.
Each specimen of the Green Mandarin Goby is wild caught and exported. Despite their popularity, they are not yet endangered. Though a mated, healthy pair breeds and lays eggs often, cultivating the eggs and raising the fry has not yet been done successfully on the commercial market. If purchasing a small specimen, it is often easier to teach the Green Mandarin Goby to accept prepared foods with patience and work. This fish can fight with same sex in this species. Sadly, this fish normally dies as it is often purchased and kept in under established tanks without enough food to consume. Death from starvation normally occurs within six months.
Maximum Size: The Green Mandarin Goby grows up to 2.5 inches. The small size will come to you generally 1 to 1½ inches; the medium generally 1½ to 2½ inches; the large generally 2½ to 4 inches.
Minimum Tank Size Suggested: The Green Mandarin Goby prefers a tank of at least 20 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim. The Green Mandarin Goby may act peacefully toward other fish.
TankConditions: Keep water quality high (SG 1.020 - 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4, Temp. 72 - 78° F).
Habitat: The Green Mandarin Gobies hail from the Philippines and the Melanesian islands. They are naturally found in reefs or coral rubble with rich sand beds, constantly on the hunt for small crustaceans.
Feeding and Diet: In the wild, Green Mandarins can consume a vast number of copepods, amphipods, and other "pods" daily. They are extremely difficult to wean onto frozen or processed foods, and many Green Mandarins will never accept anything but live pods. This is why they are considered expert level fish and are thought to best thrive in large, mature systems with copious live rock.
Because Green Mandarins have metabolisms similar to humming birds, they are always consuming, but they only eat in small portions. Ergo, an inadequate tank can have its entire pod population decimated in a matter of days. Good conditions for your pod population to sustain itself is the prior way to successfully keep the Green Mandarin Goby.
