Marbled Gecko - Christinus mamoratus

The Marbled Gecko is native to Southern Australia and can grow up to 8 inches. They have a tan color with white blotches which gives them a marbled appearance. Geckos are distinguished from other lizards by their finger and toe pads used for climbing. When threatened, Geckos can make noises in their throat whilst puffing up their bodies and pretending to jump at the predator.

Housing
Although Geckos can be kept in small enclosures, an 18” or 2 foot aquarium is preferred. A secure lid is essential as they can climb sheer surfaces including glass. Living Jungle’s new ‘Exo-terrariums’ are an excellent enclosure for your gecko. A basking area with several climbing braches should be added to your enclosure to replicate their natural environment. Geckos are shy creatures that need hide spots, caves and covering foliage. They should be provided with adequate hide facilities to reduce stress as geckos will spend most of their day hiding and will become active only at night.

Substrate
Aquarium gravel, desert sand or lizard litter are all ideal substrates for a marbled gecko enclosure. The substrate should be spot-cleaned daily and replaced when required.

Heating/Lighting
Marbled geckos are nocturnal and therefore, UVA and UVB lighting is not required. Usually, room temperature is sufficient warmth for geckos however, it is recommended that an infrared or spot lamp is used during the day for added warmth. Temperatures between 20-30 degrees are recommended. Heat rocks are not recommended due to their ability to cause burns. It is now recognized that night time light has some benefits for nocturnal creatures. That is, just as animals receive benefits from sunlight, ‘nightlight’ is also thought to provide benefits for nocturnal creatures. Under this light, the geckos will go about its normal nightly activities and also provide you with easy viewing.

Feeding
Geckos must have clean drinking water at all times. A shallow dish filled with fresh water should be changed daily and placed in a cool area of your enclosure. Their diet consists mostly of small insects, in particular crickets and maggots. Some will eat soft mashed up fruit and canned lizard food but all food should be removed after approximately 6 hours if uneaten. Adult males have also been known to eat pinkie mice. Adult geckos should be fed around 3-5 times a week and juveniles daily.
