Carpet Chameleons - Chamaeleo lateralis
The carpet chameleon is found in the mixed woodlands and forests of Madagascar. It is arboreal (a tree dweller). Adults require a 18" x 18" x 36" enclosure with branches.
Behavior
Males can become territorial, separate from other males. Usually tame but frequent handling will stress the animal. Provide dense foliage for climbing.
Captive environment
Use full spectrum lighting 12-14 hours per day. Provide a basking area with access to a cooler zone. Provide several climbing areas on branches, logs, & plants.
Temperature
Maintain day temperature range between 76-82 degrees F. Maintain night temperature range between 64-72 degrees F. Use reptile heating pads under tank for 24-hour heat.
Humidity
This species requires moderate to high levels of humidity.
Water requirements
Provide moving or constantly dripping water supply.
Nutritional requirements
This species is a carnivore (meat eater). Eats small insects, flies, mosquitos, and insect larvae. Always offer variety for proper nutrition. Dust food with calcium and vitamins. Will eat crickets and other small insects.
