The most unique aspect about the Brown Bird Wrasse is its elongated beak, which is used to catch long, skinny prey and hold it captive while breaking it up into bite size pieces. Brown Bird Wrasse is actually the name given to Gomphosus varius female. The female of Gomphosus varius is brownish black, and the male is variations of green. For this reason the male is often called the Green Bird Wrasse, and the female, the Black or Brown Bird Wrasse.
The Brown Bird Wrasse is a salt water species that are found in Indo Pacific region and areas around Hawaii. This is a moderately hardy fish. Brown Bird Wrasse may act semi aggressively toward other fish.
The Brown Bird Wrasse is a medium maintenance fish. The Brown Bird Wrasse prefers a tank of at least 80 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim. These fish tend, like most wrasses, to be jumpers so you should be certain to have a safe and secure tank with plenty of wide open swimming space for this active water column swimmer. Brown Bird Wrasse is an active swimmer but do not let the small mouth and happy behavior of Brown Bird Wrasse fool you. This fish may become aggressive toward tank mates with time. This species is known for grabbing its prey and bashing it into little bite sized pieces Brown Bird Wrasse is a carnivore and its diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods, as well as live clams, crustaceans, and worms (including fire worms).
If you are planning to add more than one Brown Bird Wrasse in your aquarium, they should be added at one time and only with one male. Brown Bird Wrasse does not bury in sand after dark, so you must provide rock structure with caves for this fish to hide in.
Maximum Size: Brown Bird Wrasse grows up to 11 inches.
