Bicolor Goatfish - Parupeneus barberinoides - Hawaiian Goat Fish

The Bicolor Goatfish, is also referred to as the Dash and DotGoatfish , Half and Half Goatfish, and Swarthy-headed Goatfish. It has a burgundy anterior and yellow posterior divided by a white band. There is a black dot on the posterior portion and a pair of white stripes on the anterior portion giving it the name Dash and Dot Goatfish. Both head and tail also have blue markings. The Bicolor Goatfish like to graze all day long in reef-protected lagoons.

The Bicolor Goatfish has total of 8 dorsal spines, 9 dorsal soft rays, I anal spines, 7 anal soft rays. The are usually 15 to 16 Pectoral rays, a total of 28 to 32 Gill rakers. The body of Bicolor Goatfish is moderately elongated. The head length varies between 2.75 and 3.15 in SL, snout length between 1.8 and 2.0 in HL, barbell length between 1.3 and 1.5 in HL. The head and interior half of body is reddish black. The posterior half of the Bicolor Goatfish is white and yellow with a black spot nearly as large as eye on upper side below rear base of second dorsal fin followed by small blue spots and a white band of snout passing above eye along dorsal part of body and a second nearly parallel from one corner of mouth to above pectoral fin.

The caudal fin is pale yellow with a broad, dusky lower margin, and often with a small red spot at mid-base.

Size: Up to 40 cm long Bicolor Goatfish has been found but they usually grow upto 30 cm in length. The small size will come to you generally 2 to 3 inches; the medium generally 4 to 5 inches; the large generally 6 to 7 inches.

Minimum Tank Size Suggested: A 50 gallon or larger aquarium with plenty of swimming room is recommended for the Bicolor Goatfish with plenty of places to hide and swim.

Tank Conditions: The bottom of the tank should be sandy so that Bicolor Goatfish may use its barbels to sift through the substrate in search of food (invertebrates, small crustaceans, worms). Because it eats the invertebrates, the nitrogen load capacity of the sand will be reduced. Feeding and Diet: The diet of the Bicolor Goatfish should consist of fresh or frozen meaty preparations. If the aquarium is fish-only, it will keep the bottom of the tank immaculate by eating fallen meaty foods. It should be fed 3-4 times daily.
