White Cheek Tang - Acanthurus nigricans: The White Cheek Tang is commonly referred as Powder Brown and Gold-Rimmed Surgeon. This fish comes to you in brown color with contrasting white patches, below its eye. A fully grown White Cheek Tang has an attractive jet black anal, dorsal and ventral fins with blue edges. White colored tail and vertically yellow bar adds grace to its beauty. Though, White Cheek Tang resembles other members of tang family, Acanthurus japonicus. It is not as pretty as the later. A well rounded head is the sign of a healthy fish. This is not a hardy fish; Acanthurus nigricans derives its name for being infamous behavior under captivity.

The White Cheek Tang is easy to maintain and it is well known to be peace loving. However, it is not advisable to have more than one fish in the same tank. But, at times two or more fish can be introduced in the same aquarium, provided the tank is sufficiently large and has lot of space for the fish to swim about.

Under no circumstances, White Cheek Tang and other fish that share same body styles should not be together. Before introducing it to the tank, at least for a couple of week this fish is to be kept in quarantine. This offers them protection against contracting infection. These varieties are susceptible to disease in a new environment and in case of any symptoms; it has to be treated with copper-based solutions. The White Cheek Tang fish are well known group spawners.
