The Red Velvet Wrasse is also known as the Rosy scales Fairy Wrasse. Red Velvet Wrasse is a very bright rainbow splash of color. The Red Velvet Wrasse is a small colorful wrasse with the front part of the body being red and the remainder being yellow. As the fish matures, the scales toward the front of the fish develop dark edges. The color of the female is subdued when comparing it to the brilliance of the male. During courtship, the sides of the male will turn almost white in an attempt to persuade his mate. Colors may vary depending on the fish's mood. This fish is one of the larger of the fairy wrasse species reaching almost five inches in length as an adult.

The Red Velvet Wrasse is a salt water species and originates from the waters surrounding the Maldives islands. The Red Velvet Wrasse is a very peaceful and active fish that will bring both color and activity to a fish only or reef aquarium of 50 gallons or larger. They will not bother any corals or invertebrates making them a perfect fish for the reef aquarium. Red Velvet Wrasse likes to jump, so a tight fitting canopy is recommended. Like other fairy wrasses of the Cirrhilabrus genus, it is fairly hardy and should be given plenty of places to hide. After it establishes it will become more active and be one of the best eaters in your tank.

In captivity Red Velvet Wrasse tend to dull in color slightly when lacking the presence of another male. Do not attempt to keep more than one male unless they will live in a very large tank. Females are best introduced to the tank before or at the same time as the male. They will behave aggressively toward other fairy wrasses that arrive to the tank after them. The Red Velvet Wrasse may act semi aggressively toward other fish.
