Multicolor Angelfish - Centropyge multicolor - Multicolor Dwarf Angel Fish

The Multicolor Angelfish, also known as the Pastel Pygmy Angelfish or Many-colored Angelfish, is pale peach-orange to yellow. Black speckles on a background of blue highlight an area just behind the eyes. The dorsal and anal fins are blue-black while the caudal fin is yellow. In bright contrast to its other colors, there is a horizontal swatch of silvery-white from mid-body to the caudal fin.

The Multicolor Angelfish needs a minimum of a 30-gallon tank with lots of hiding places and live rock for grazing on microalgae. It does best in subdued lighting, since in the wild, it is a deep-water swimmer. If the Multicolor Angelfish is to be housed with other dwarf angels, a 55 gallon or larger tank is required. Not a good reef dweller, the Multicolor Angelfish is prone to nip at stony and soft corals (sessile invertebrates) and clam mantles. It is sensitive to copper-based medications.

Water Conditions:
Keep water quality high (SG 1.020 - 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4, Temp. 72 - 78° F). The Multicolor Angelfish groups up to 3.5 Inches in size. Dwarf Multicolor Angelfish Are generally available at 2-4 inches.

Habitat: Fiji, Cooks Islands, and Society Islands.

Specific Care Information: Dwarf Multicolor Angelfish are generally peaceful fish but will often quarrel with members of their own species and even genus if they look similar enough. Though there are reports generalizing this species are 'reef safe', we strongly advise to add them to a reef with extreme caution. The reason for this is that many of Multicolor species will behave like model citizens for a while, but one day will go after corals and clams for no reason. This may have something to do with the Dwarf Multicolor Angelfish being predominately plankton eaters as juveniles. An underfed adult may attempt to try something new and find that clams and corals are it's newest favorite diet. We recommend purchasing the youngest specimen available in hopes it settles down and learns to eat a captive diet prior to learning that corals and clams are a tasty treat.

It is important to provide Dwarf Multicolor Angelfish with plenty of good quality cured live rock and a well aquascaped aquarium with caves, archways and overhangs to swim through or hide in. Especially if there will be more than one Dwarf Multicolor Angelfish in the same aquarium. Members of the Centropyge genus are referred to as Dwarf Angelfish because of their smaller size in relation to their larger Chaetodontoplus, Genicanthus, Holacanthus and Pomacanthus cousins.

Diet: The diet of the Multicolor Angelfish should include Spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysid or frozen shrimp, and other high-quality meaty items.

Breeding and Propagation: The Multicolor Angelfish is very difficult to breed in an aquarium, and has no distinguishable differences in color between male to female.
