Bartlett's Anthias - Pseudanthias bartlettorum - Bartlett's Fairy Anthias

The Bartlett's Anthias is also known as the Bartlets Fairy Bass.This yellow and purple or pink anthias is one of the hardiest members of the genus. Able to adapt to both bright and dim aquaria with ease, the Bartlett’s Anthias is considered one of the easier of the Anthias family to keep in brightly lit reef aquariums.It should be kept in a spacious tank with optimal water quality. Provide it with plenty of hiding places and do not add it to a tank with any remotely aggressive tankmates. However, once it acclimates, it can take care of itself (that is, it can be kept with moderately pugnacious species like pygmy angels and small dottybacks). Keep only one-two males per tank. If you want to have a group, they should only be housed in a large tank of over 100 gallons. They will do fine singly. Great for a reef aquarium! The males have a more intense coloration with a violet body and yellow running along the back. The females tend to be lavender in color with a yellow back and caudal fin.

The Bartlett's Anthais does best when kept with its own species, but is also is a beautiful fish for the fish only, invertebrate or reef aquarium. The Anthias dwells in the middle of a tank but appreciates the availability of several hiding places.

The diet is consistent with other members of the Anthias group - zooplankton and floating filamentous algae. In the aquarium, it should be fed a varied diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and other meaty items, small quantities of food several times per day are preferable for Anthias to help them maintain weight.

Because of their higher metabolism and constant activity in the water column, Anthias require multiple feedings each day. Most Anthias prefer dimly lit tanks, though there are a few that will learn to adjust to brighter lights of reef aquariums and will spend most of their time swimming in the water column and will need ample open water column to do so.

Maximum Size: The Bartlett’s Anthias grows up to 4 inches.

General Size Specifications: The small size will come to you generally 1 to 2 inches; the medium generally 3 to 4 inches; the large generally 5 to 6 inches not including the caudal fin.

Minimum Tank Size Suggested: The Bartlett’s Anthias prefers a tank of over 100 Gallons.

Water Conditions: Keep water quality high (SG 1.020 - 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4, Temp. 72 - 78° F).

Natural Environment: Inhabit reef faces and slopes/drop-off areas

Habitat: Bartlett’s Anthias are found near Western Pacific Ocean: Palau, Caroline Islands, Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Fanning Islands in Kiribati

Diet: Bartlett’s Anthias are zooplankton feeders so care should be taken to feed meaty foods for zooplankton feeders. Frozen zooplankton foods will be more readily accepted than flake or pellet until the Bartlett’sAnthias grow accustomed to a captive diet. Feed at least 4 times daily.

Breeding: Bartlett’s Anthias species all share the trait of being hermaphroditic. If a dominant male perishes, the largest female of the group will often morph to take its place.
